MAMORU OSHII book review [nonfiction] Part 28, STORYBOARD OF PATLABOR

-----

There're some Mamoru Oshii book lists on the Internet, but they don't have detailed explanations about the contents. My Mamoru Oshii book collection is far from complete, but I'd like to write some short summaries for each of those books.

I apologize in advance for grammatical errors and misinformation.

[review]

These are the storyboards of Patlabor 1 & 2 the movies. They're extra items of the DVD limited edition. Unlike the other DVD/Blu-ray, the limited edition doesn't contain the original 2.1ch sound.

Oshii used a word processor in P2, but the text is handwritten in P1's storyboard. Oshii's handwritten text is sometimes a bit hard to read.

There are many differences between the storyboards and the films.

For example, Goto and Chief Fukushima talk about the previous chief of SV2 in the storyboard. The chief was Sofue in the OVA, but he resigned after ep5 and 6. Fukushima argues that Goto set him up. Goto plays innocent with a creepy face. That scene was omitted, apparently.

In P2, Oshii planned some conflict scenes between Matsui and Arakawa, but those scenes were deleted too. Some of the deleted scenes were reused in the novel version called "Tokyo War".

Both of them are good items for Oshii enthusiasts, but, unlike "methods" or some other storyboard books, they don't contain Oshii's comments.
