MAMORU OSHII book review [nonfiction] Part 24, SHONEN SUNDAY GRAPHIC: BEAUTIFUL DREAMER

-----

There're some Mamoru Oshii book lists on the Internet, but they don't have detailed explanations about the contents. My Mamoru Oshii book collection is far from complete, but I'd like to write some short summaries for each of those books.

I apologize in advance for grammatical errors and misinformation.

[review]

Shonen Sunday Graphic is Shogakukan's magazine brand. There are 15 volumes for Urusei Yatsura, and vol.10 features Beautiful Dreamer.

The contents feel so "80s", so I can't say I fully appreciated them. It's different from the current standards of anime databases. I bought it because, as far as I know, only this book covers the cut footage of Beautiful Dreamer. It is not uncommon to cut some scenes in film-making, but Oshii cut only one scene in this film. It's one of Ataru's dream scenes controlled by Mujaki. The scene goes like this:

In the far-future world, old Ataru is sitting lost in thought. A space pilot/ Mujaki speaks to him, "The space ship is going to take off. You should hurry up." Ataru doesn't want to move because his lover rests under the ground of the planet. However, he suddenly realizes that he doesn't remember the lover's name.

It is a very good scene, but Oshii cut it for the pacing.

I think Oshii mentioned the scene in some other books, but the screen captures are contained only in this book. The voice and sound of this scene were not recorded.

*Later, I found that the screen capture of the scene is included in another anime magazine called Animec.
